Those who have just graduated find themselves applying for positions that many people are competing for. The first choice will be a more mature student or someone who has experience.
A lot of the youth have started to head overseas in search of positions which pay well and where they are able to find a job easily. However, not everyone is able to do this. It is only those with wealthy parents that are able to send their kids overseas. A lot of young people in South Africa come from backgrounds where there are no finances available and this poses more of a problem.
The young people who are well off are flocking to other parts of the world, which leaves the country left with more disadvantages youths. There are more opportunities in other parts. There is a greater demand for those who have graduated from universities with top degrees. Often they head off for some experience. They may find that there are internships available.
Gap years are becoming more common these days as well. However, the problem is that there is no set goal in mind. After a year of gallivanting around the country or the world, one may not be sure what to do. Funds have run out, and youths will be at home, feeling lost. Young people tend to stay at home with their parents longer these days as well.
More and more people are encouraging people to start their own business in South Africa. However, when you are still young, this is not easy and mistakes can be made. One needs to learn from someone else or by joining with an older partner who will show him or her ropes. Some youths lack ambition and motivation and need to be coached by a mentor, so that they are able to go forward in life.
Starting a business is the best way to go, but one needs to be motivated and determined. Often young people are not ready for the business world and they need to learn from someone else as an intern. This may even be beneficial if they volunteer. They should have a plan and there are organizations to help with this. There are certain business developments to help them get started.
