Some Facts About Social Justice

By Peter Allen

Socialism is a rather broad topic that a lot of people have been exposed to either in class or maybe through news about rallies and movements. One of the most common concepts in socialist movements is the concept of social justice and is a broad topic that this ideology centers on . In order for one to understand what it is about, one has to first break down its definition and go from there.

In a very broad sense, this concept embraces all forms of equality. It is a concept that all the people in a society are entitled to have access to healthcare, wealth, well being, justice under the law, and work opportunities equally. This means that there should be no form of prejudice against any group of people whether race, social class, gender, or religion.

Now, most people would associate this term with leftist movements like the Democratic party since it is a socialist concept. However, it is a term that is so broad that it is not really associated with any party or movement. Rather, it is a broad concept that many parties and religious movements embrace as a part of their ideology.

Interestingly enough, socialism has also been associated with the more extremist groups like the Marxists. This does make sense as the core of communism is in the overall equality of people in a society to the point that everyone will receive equal wealth and rights while working with all the same effort. However, socialism is not just for communism but just centers around the whole ideology of communism.

This brand of justice today is more associated with human rights which is very much fought for by a lot of groups. Human rights generally encompasses the principle that all humans have equal rights to certain privileges under the law. As mentioned, these rights should not be given out of prejudice due to racial background or affiliation with groups.

One example would be the prevalence of racism in Western culture. In the criminal system, Latinos and African American individuals are not treated the same way that white convicts are. This in itself is a form of racism that harms these ethnic groups that happen to live in that society.

Another example would be that of the healthcare system. If one would follow this socialist concept, universal healthcare is supposedly a human right because it involves giving the best treatment for the overall well being of citizens. Following this concept, healthcare is not to be seen as a privilege that is only to be enjoyed by the rich because that would mean it is discrimination against certain social classes.

The first thing that one has to keep in mind would be equality because that is what it centers upon. While the whole idea behind the concept is a great one that is beneficial to society, implementation of reforms can be a big problem because each group has their own definition of the term. It is because of its broad definition that are some disputes between socialist groups advocating for change.
