All of these items are very easy to get if you do not already have them as they will all be available from the local home improvements or hardware store.
There is a lot of planning that will need to be done and the first task is to decide where the pit is going to be placed as you will want to out it where you will be able to maximise its use. Bear in mind the location of it in terms of the house as you will not the smoke from the BBQ going into the house as this will make everything smelly.
Another important aspect that you need to consider is what size you want and how much of the yard will the pit take up. It is best to avoid it taking up too much of the yard or you will not have space to relax and enjoy it. Take time to think about this aspect in a practical way as it will be hard to move or change the pit once you have made it.
You will need to decide what shape you want the pit too be and if you had a vision of how you want it to look you may already know exactly what shape you want it. The most common shapes are rectangular and square however you can design it in any shape that you want as long as it is practical.
The shape that you opt for will really be a case of personal preference and what would work best for your needs. You will need to dig into the ground for at least eight inches and about fifty inches around the perimeter. Clear the area and measure it correctly and then level off the surface.
Once the area is prepared you will need to put the gravel in the area so that it is about two inches thick and then put a layer of mortar on top about two inches in from the sides all the way around. Using the trowel put a combination of water and mortar into the pit area.
Then smooth up the area whilst the mortar is actually still wet. Continue to do this process until the pit is at the height where you require it to be for using.
